Oregon City Municipal Elevator in Oregon City, OR

The Oregon City Municipal Elevator is the only one of four municipal elevators in the world. It is otherwise known as "Elevator Street" and remains as the sole "vertical street" in North America. Located in Downtown Oregon City, you can reach this site by driving down McLoughlin Blvd along the Willamette River and you can readily see the greenish-gray structure along the cliff away from the river. The lift was constructed because, in the early years, most of Oregon City was located on the "first-level" along the Willamette River and as the city grew, the need for an easier way to travel to the upper levels of the town became apparent.
